Sealants

Sealants are not just for kids! Adults are subject to tooth decay, especially in the hard to clean back teeth – both molars and premolars. This is why we also recommend sealants for adults who may be prone to cavities.

Sealants

Newly erupted teeth are extremely susceptible to tooth decay. To aid in the protection of your child’s precious teeth, we recommend placing a barrier into the deep grooves of the chewing surface to help block out cavity-causing bugs.

With the addition of Isolite to keep the tooth dry, sealants are even easier for your child. The tooth is first cleaned with air abrasion to remove plaque and debris, then etch is placed on the tooth to roughen the surface, allowing the sealant to stick to the tooth. Next, the sealant is “painted” onto the tooth and set with a light. No anesthetic is needed.

It’s typical for parents to consider getting sealants for their children between the ages of six to 14. Sealant should be placed on their permanent molars and premolars as soon as the teeth come in. In this way, the sealants can protect the teeth through a child’s cavity-prone years.

Expect your sealants to typically last ten years. However, they will need to be inspected during regular check-ups to note any chips or wearing. If you have an existing sealant, our doctors can replace the sealant as necessary.
