Root Canal Therapy

Sometimes due to injury/trauma or large cavities, the nerves inside the tooth become infected and die. When a tooth reaches this stage, there are two options: remove the tooth or save it with root canal treatment. A root canal procedure involves cleaning, shaping, and filling the canals to help prevent re-infection. After a root canal the tooth loses its strength, and can break easily. Crowns are recommended to protect a tooth with a root canal from breaking away.

After treatment, your tooth may be sensitive or tender for a week or two after root canal therapy. However, bad pain or swelling should not be expected. If you experience pain or swelling, contact us immediately for emergency care.

With proper care, your tooth could last as long as your other teeth, even with a root canal. However, occasionally, a second root canal, or re-treatment, may be required on your tooth. This is rare. The process, if necessary, involves simply removing the original root canal filling, re-cleaning the canal, and reshaping and refilling the cavity.
