Why It’s Critical to Have Dental Care for Seniors

Uncategorized

Whether you’re eight or 81 years old, dental care is important. At our Kelowna dental clinic, we see many seniors who don’t realize some of the oral health problems they’re at risk of, or the steps they could be taking to prevent them.

If you’re a senior or you care for a senior, make note of this information on oral care for seniors so you or your loved one can enjoy a healthy smile.

Oral health problems seniors are at risk of:

1. Denture-related problems
. When dentures don’t fit well or they’re not cleaned properly, fungus can grow and inflame tissues in the mouth.

2. Gum disease. As you age, you’re even more susceptible to gum disease because of medical conditions such as cancer and diabetes, or because of a lifetime of plaque build-up, tobacco use, eating unhealthy foods or ill-fitted dentures. Seniors with gum disease risk losing their teeth, which can affect their jawbone and their ability to enjoy life.

3. Medicationcausing dental issues. The pills seniors take to treat cancer and other immune-affecting diseases can cause thrush (the overgrowth of mouth fungus), dry mouth, gum disease and a diminished sense of taste.

In addition to lifestyle choices and medication, some seniors struggle to practice good dental habits.

At our Kelowna dental centre, we see many seniors who simply can’t brush or floss their teeth because of arthritis in their hands and fingers. When oral hygiene is neglected, seniors are at a real risk of developing gum disease, and the health effects will start to spiral.

Some seniors also struggle to care for their teeth because they’re on fixed budgets. Fortunately, with daily brushing and flossing, seniors can keep plaque at bay and keep their mouths pretty healthy.

Seniors, if you’re able to, brush twice a day with a toothpaste that contains fluoride, floss at least once a day, and see your Kelowna dentist every six months for a cleaning and examination.
