Tips for Taking Care of Baby’s Teeth from a Kelowna Dental Clinic

It’s hard to believe your little one’s teeth are here. But they’re not just for looking cute. At our Kelowna dental centre we give families a handful of tips so you can take care of your baby’s teeth and keep them strong.

Top ways to take care of your baby’s teeth:

1.  Wipe baby’s gums with a cloth and water after every feeding.  This will encourage your baby’s salivary glands to drool and rinse, and it keeps leftover milk from collecting on her gums. If she doesn’t have any teeth yet, no need for toothpaste. If that tooth has already popped in, you can move on to a baby toothbrush and a tiny amount of fluoride toothpaste.

2. Visit the dentist. Most Kelowna dentists suggest your child’s first trip to the dentist take place soon after that first tooth shows up, or before their first birthday. Early appointments help get baby in the habit of going to the dentist and it allows your dentist to spot problems early. See our post on what to expect at your child’s first dental appointment.

3. Offer baby nutritious foods. If your baby is onto solids, try to avoid high-sugar crackers that can pool in baby’s gums and teeth. Instead, offer fruits and calcium-rich snacks such as cheese and yogurt.

4. Let baby watch you brush. Before you know it, he’ll want to do everything you’re doing. If he sees you brushing regularly, it will easily become part of his daily routine too. While it’s easy to wipe his teeth now, he might not be so keen to let you brush later if the habit doesn’t develop early on. At our Kelowna dental clinic, we also encourage parents to bring babies to their dental appointments so the clinic becomes a familiar place.

Whether you’re visiting us for cosmetic or general dentistry, we provide a comfortable experience with results that will last. Contact us to book an appointment today!
